Polar ice melt driven by climate change is affecting Earth's rotation, according to new research. A human-driven change in the Earth's rotation has never been seen before, and may affect computing. DrPixel/Getty ImagesDon't worry — this change in Earth's rotation won't be catastrophic. Denis Tangney Jr./Getty ImagesAs a result, scientists predict that we would need the first-ever negative leap second by 2026. iStock / Getty Images PlusThere are three main mechanisms that control the Earth's spin:One is tidal friction, or the interaction between moving ocean water and the ocean floor, which slows Earth's rotation.

Clocks may have to skip a second — called a “negative leap second” — around 2029, a study in the journal Nature said Wednesday. “We are headed toward a negative leap second," said Dennis McCarthy, retired director of time for the U.S. Without the effect of melting ice, Earth would need that negative leap second in 2026 instead of 2029, Agnew calculated. In 2012, some computer systems mishandled the leap second, causing problems for Reddit, Linux, Qantas Airlines and others, experts said. Then add in the “weird” effect of subtracting, not adding a leap second, Agnew said.

Exactly when that will happen is being influenced by humans, according to a new study, as melting polar ice alters the Earth’s rotation and changes time itself. The hours and minutes that dictate our days are determined by Earth’s rotation. But after a long trend of slowing, the Earth’s rotation is now speeding up. Melting polar ice is slowing the impact on Earth’s rotation and has delayed the date by three years, pushing it from 2026 to 2029, the report found. Changes in Earth’s rotation over the long term have been dominated by the friction of the tides on the ocean floor — which has slowed down its rotation.

LONDON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The UK government has scrapped guarantees on nearly 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion) of bank loans handed out to ailing businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving lenders on the hook for some of the borrowings that will not be repaid. The figures could rise further - latest figures show just 17 billion pounds have been fully repaid by borrowers as of June 30. The largest and most controversial, the "Bounce Back Loan" (BBL) scheme, delivered 47 billion pounds and was specially designed to help Britain's smallest firms stay afloat. Following the removal, any financial loss is borne in full by the lender, BBB said. The figures also showed the government had paid out 7.4 billion pounds to lenders under the state guarantees.

Mental strength sets England apart at World Cup - Vaughan
  + stars: | 2023-10-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
After following up their 2019 ODI title with victory in the Twenty20 World Cup last year, winning in India would mark England's "greatest period of sporting domination", Vaughan wrote in a Telegraph column on Wednesday. "They can do it because England are very tough mentally. "They generally blow teams away but when it gets spicy – such as the 2019 World Cup final and the must-win games in that tournament – they are mentally stronger than the rest." Vaughan said England have the "perfect" batting line-up, highlighting the even spread of right- and left-handers in their top order, but was worried about how the bowlers will adapt to the conditions. England begin their World Cup defence later on Thursday when they take on New Zealand in the tournament opener in Ahmedabad.

London CNN —Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has been cleared of all charges after a four-week trial in London on claims of sexual assault. Spacey thanked the jury after it cleared him following 12 hours and 26 minutes of deliberation across three days. The complainant said that one time, Spacey acted so forcefully it “took his breath away.” Spacey denied this ever happened. Spacey invited him to his London apartment two weeks later and sexually assaulted him, the man alleged. The complainant alleged that he had been drugged by the actor, and said he woke up to Spacey performing a sexual act on him.

Opening the prosecution case at London's Southwark Crown Court, lawyer Christine Agnew told the jury the "predatory" Spacey was not just an extremely famous actor who had won a number of awards but "a man who sexually assaults other men". "A man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable – a sexual bully," Agnew said. Spacey, who is being tried under his full name Kevin Spacey Fowler, watched proceedings from the dock, wearing a grey suit, a gold-coloured tie and glasses. "Each of these allegations of non-consensual sexual conduct is completely denied," his lawyer Patrick Gibbs said. The actor Kevin Spacey is “a sexual bully” who “delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable,” a prosecutor told a British jury on Friday. Speaking at Southwark Crown Court, the prosecutor, Christine Agnew, outlined her case against the Academy Award-winning actor, who is on trial in London facing multiple charges of sexual assault. The actor “abused the power and influence that his reputation and fame afforded him" to take “who he wanted, when he wanted,” Ms. Agnew said. Mr. Spacey has pleaded not guilty to all charges. For much of that period, Mr. Spacey was the artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London.

CNN —Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is “a sexual bully” and “a man who sexually assaults other men,” a British prosecutor alleged Friday at the start of a sexual assault trial in which he is charged with 12 offenses against four men. Prosecutor Christine Agnew told jurors at London’s Southwark Crown Court that “House of Cards” actor Spacey, 63, is “a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable, a sexual bully,” the PA Media news agency reported. Spacey was charged last year. Jurors were selected for the trial on Wednesday, and were then dismissed until Friday. The charges relate to alleged incidents in and around London in the 2000s and early 2010s, during the 12-year period in which Spacey served as artistic director at London’s Old Vic theater.

NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - The head of healthcare investing at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GS.N), Jo Natauri, will leave the company at the end of the year to pursue other opportunities in the sector. "We're entering a pretty attractive period for healthcare private investing, which I think could be pretty interesting to explore," Natauri told Reuters, without giving details about her next move. Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) has invested $5 billion in healthcare assets over the last five years, she said. Natauri, who will step down from Goldman Sachs Group's elite partner ranks, spent 17 years at the U.S. banking group. Donald Trump’s criminal cases, explained

Trump was indicted back in March by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to hush-money payments to a former adult-film star in 2016. Smith is also overseeing other investigations related to Trump, including those regarding the January 6, 2021, insurrection and the 2020 election. That federal law deals with the illegal retention of “national defense information,” a broad term that encompasses classified documents and other sensitive government materials. Federal charges related to classified documents likely do not either. But people do routinely serve prison time for retention of classified documents, conspiracy and obstruction.

Melinda Agnew has done a lot in the 25 years since she got in trouble with the law: She earned an associate degree, followed by a bachelor’s and a master’s. To answer it truthfully — she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault — is to be denied jobs she is otherwise qualified for and apartments she can afford to rent. To lie is to undercut the person she has fought so hard these past decades to become. Lawmakers in Albany are considering legislation aimed at lifting that burden for Ms. Agnew and millions of others. Known as the Clean Slate Act, the bill would automatically seal the criminal records of people who have paid their debt to society and remained out of trouble for a specified number of years — three for misdemeanors, seven for most felonies.
It's likely to become commonplace that tools used by first responders and police will run on 5G networks. This article is part of "How 5G Is Changing Everything," a series about transformational 5G tech across industries. In June, from a remote farmer's field in Missouri, where cows wandered through the grass, AT&T tested its first 5G drone. Helped along by 5G, new technology designed to speed up disaster response is under development. In the meantime, though, networks and companies say they're continuing to innovate and expect 5G to have a profound impact on disaster response.
Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint a special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump is a miscalculation, with the main problem being timing. Despite assurances from Garland that a special counsel will not bog down the investigation, reality suggests otherwise. Not to mention that past practice demonstrates that the Justice Department has regularly shown that anyone can be held accountable — without resorting to a special counsel. No special counsel was used. I believe Trump’s day of reckoning is long overdue, and Garland’s overly cautious decision to appoint a special counsel may continue postponing that day.
Nov 14 (Reuters) - Squire Patton Boggs on Monday said it will open an office in Dublin next year, becoming the latest international law firm to expand into Ireland. Agnew was a founding partner of Pinsent Masons' Dublin office. A Squire Patton Boggs spokesperson said the firm is currently looking at space in Dublin's central business district. Agnew said in an email that the exact timing of his departure from Pinsent Masons "has still to be agreed." Squire Patton Boggs was created in 2014 by the merger of Washington, D.C.-founded Patton Boggs and Cleveland-founded Squire Sanders.
Dan McCafferty, the longtime lead singer of the Scottish rock band Nazareth whose searing vocals propelled a cover of the ballad "Love Hurts" into a 1970s hit, has died, his longtime bandmate announced. McCafferty was 76, Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew said on the band's official Facebook page. "If it wasn’t for Dan McCafferty and Nazareth I wouldn’t be singing," Rose said in a 1988 interview. "Love Hurts," a ballad first made famous by The Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison as well, became an international hit for Nazareth in 1974. The band also scored several hits of their own, including "Hair of the Dog" which is a rock radio staple that continues to get airplay.
London CNN —Dan McCafferty, the original lead singer of Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, has died aged 76, his band has confirmed. Nazareth is best known for its hit cover of "Love Hurts." McCafferty was one of the founding members of Nazareth, which evolved out of the Scottish beat group Shadettes, in 1968, along with Agnew, Manny Charlton and Darrell Sweet. He stopped touring with Nazareth in autumn of that year after making the album “Rock ‘n’ Roll Telephone,” and English rock singer Carl Sentence was recruited as the band’s new lead vocalist. McCafferty had several personal projects, releasing his final solo album, “Last Testament,” in 2019.
